Michael, you were a great man. You weren’t just a stepdad; you were a rock in our lives. I have so many happy memories that you helped create. Greek holidays, where you convinced us you could evaporate clouds with your laser eyes, country walks with dogs, pilgrimages to see the illusive nightjar and the opportunity to tear around in an MG Metro. I also took great pride in bragging about your academic achievements – ‘He’s a Doctor you know. He wrote a thesis on the biochemistry of the brain this thick’. Above all though, you provided a fun, loving and happy home life.
There were lots of challenges along the way. You always found a way to deal with adversity and managed to make the best of some of the difficult circumstances we found ourselves in as a family. At times I am sure I tried your patience! During my teenage years I was difficult (as was Abigail…). We had our moments, but you were always there to support and to offer guidance and love – it was unconditional.
The influence you had on me was far reaching yet I still find it uncanny sometimes when I do or say things that make me double take myself…. ‘god, I sound just like Michael!’ Usually a good thing, but often Victor Meldrew esque. As my years pressed on, we did enjoy sharing a rant and putting the world to rights!
You’ll be deeply missed. I wish you’d been with us longer but I’m glad that your pain has ended. You’ll be pleased to know that your record collection is in safe hands and will be cherished, conjuring up happy memories of you and our times together every time I spin a disc.
Gone but not forgotten, rest in peace.
